À PRIMEIRA VISTA (PRIMA FACIE)
Prima Facie — Latin legal expression meaning: At first glance.
Margarida Vila-Nova stars in the Portuguese version of PRIMA FACIE, by Suzie Miller, directed by Tiago Guedes.
Both a powerful monologue and a breathtaking legal thriller, À PRIMEIRA VISTA
(PRIMA FACIE) is one of the most acclaimed plays of recent years. An incisive examination of power, consent and the law, it has won several awards and nominations, including the Tony, Lawrence Olivier, What’s on Stage, Drama Desk, Evening Standard and Australian Writers' Guild.
Teresa is a brilliant young lawyer. Coming from a humble working-class family, she has risen to prominence solely on her own merit and hard work, establishing herself as a gifted defence lawyer. She defends, cross-examines and wins case after case consecutively. An unexpected event forces her to confront the lines where patriarchal power of the law, burden of proof and morality diverge, at a crossroads where emotion and experience collide with the rules of the game.
Prima Facie premiered in 2019 at the Griffin Theatre in Sydney, Australia. It toured that continent in 2021, was presented in London's West End in 2022 and arrived on Broadway in 2023. In 2020, it won the Australian Writers' Guild Award for Drama, the David Williamson Award for Outstanding Theatre Writing and the prestigious Major Australian Writers' Guild Award in all categories of theatre, film and television. In 2022, it was nominated for five Lawrence Olivier Awards, winning Best Play and Best Actress, and for four Tonys in 2023, where Jodie Comer once again won the award for Best Actress. In the same year, the show was nominated for more than twenty awards, having been recognised with Best Play and Best Actress at What's on Stage and Best Actress at the Drama Desk and Evening Standard Awards.
